Contamination Pilot

Contamination is a systemic issue, and one of the greatest challenges that composters face. More data is needed to understand how much contamination exists in feedstock, overs and finished compost. This can further support the industry and address contamination at scale.

Conducted in partnership with 10 full-scale compost manufacturers across the U.S., our in-field pilot aims to establish a baseline for contamination rates and common contaminants, dispel myths through greater data transparency and evaluate how composters are addressing contamination challenges at their sites. If we are to scale food waste composting infrastructure in the U.S., we must first solve for contamination. Data gathered from this pilot will be used to support future research efforts and will serve as a foundational step to move the industry forward.

Results from the pilot are coming soon.
